Sources for paper

As we start class today, take five minutes and tell the rest of us what book you found in the library over the weekend. What’s the title and who’s the author? Who published this book? Do you think it’s a scholarly source, or is it from a more popular press?

Also, give us a quick update on what you think you’ll write your first paper about. What do you think your primary text will be? If you haven’t found one yet, what texts are you thinking about writing about? Or, what issue are you interested in pursuing?

  1. I plan on writing about the movie "Homeless to Harvard". It is a Lifetime Original Movie. It is based on the Liz Murray story. I do not think it is a scholarly source.

I think I will write my first paper on the themes of this movie. I will also find scholarly sources to either support or argue against the themes and thesis I create.

  2. Today I got the book, "Child Poverty in America Today" by Barbara Arrighi and David Maume. The book was published by the Greenwood Publishing Group. I believe that this is a scholarly source because there is a lot of statistical evidence in the book and there doesn't seem to be any major bias.
Also, I believe I will be writing on the Pursuit of Happyness. I really enjoyed this movie and feel like it will be an excellent primary source.

  3. The book I found is called Preserving Childhood for Children in Shelters. It is edited by Thelma harms, Edele Richardson Ray, and Pam Rolandelli. It is published by the Child Welfare League of America Inc. I think it is a scholarly book, however, it is more along the lines of statistics rather than a literary criticism.

I think I will write my paper childhood and homelessness by either using Ragged Dick or possibly the film, The Pursuit of Happyness. I plan to watch the film and see what interests me.

  4. I got two books from the library. "Braving the Street: the Anthropology of Homelessness" by Irene Glasser and Rae Bridgman focuses on a social science perspective of homelessness. The title suggests that homelessness is perilous. This book is the first in a volume, and it is edited by people in the Dept. of Anthropology at Brown University, so I'm guessing it would be considered a scholarly source. I would like to focus on wealth disparities in societies in my paper, and why they occur. My second book is called "Poverty Amidst Prosperity: The urban poor in England, 1834-1914" by Carl Chin. It focuses on the same period and location as "Ragged Dick," so if I use that as my first text this book will come in handy. This book is edited by people at universities, and it lists bibliographical sources. I'm not sure if it is scholarly.

  5. For my paper I am hoping to writing about the Denver Voice. I like the idea of seeing homelessness represented by the homeless and their method of expression. If I find that it doesn't hold what I was leaning toward writing about, I will probably use the film Pursuit of Happyness or potentially "Ragged Dick". I think that any of these have potential as a primary text for my paper.
I found a few scholarly articles that look promising and am looking through books at the library for a good source.

  6. I checked out the book Children of Poverty, written by Lawrence C. Gibel. Because its edited by Stuart Bruchey from the University of Maine and published by Garland Inc, I believe its a scholarly source.

Right now I want to look into how Horatio Algerism has contributed to peoples' negative attitudes toward the homeless. Keeping in mind that I need to be analyzing a specific text, I will explore how the story of Ragged Dick perpetuates the myth that homeless individuals can always lift themselves out of poverty with the right attitude and work ethic.

I might also check out the movie, My Man Godfrey, which my friend suggested as a good movie about homelessness.

  7. I would like to use a chapter from the book entitled, "The Soloist: A Lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship, and the Redemptive Power of Music," by Steve Lopez. This novel is about a musician who used to be a successful student at Juilliard, but had a mental breakdown that overcame him. Years later, a reporter for the Los Angeles Times finds him playing on the streets, and they form an unlikely friendship as the reporter tries to move the musician out of homelessness.

My second book is entitled, "Address Unknown: The Homelessness In America." This book is a study of the various causes of homlessness, and I am hoping I can specifically relate it to a chapter in "The Soloist."

  8. The book I checked out is called Understanding and Responding to Homeless Experiences, Identities and Cultures by Mike Seal. It is published by Russell House Publishing. I am not sure if it is a scholarly source.

I would like to analyze how the writers of the Denver Voice persuade readers to think and act in response to the issue of homelessness in the Denver community. I feel that it will be interesting to look into a real life, timely primary source.

  9. The book that I have been looking at is entitled "Poverty Amidst Prosperity" and it focuses on the urban poor in England from 1834-1914. Though England is not the place in which Ragged Dick takes place, the book seems to have some good ideas and insights that I could use for my paper. As of now I am still deciding on whether or not I want to use Ragged Dick as my primary text, or maybe the movie The Pursuit of Happyness. I have also been thinking a little about using some of the themes present in the movie Slumdog Millionaire because it deals with homeless children, though it is not the main focus of the movie so I'm not sure if I will or even am able to use that movie in respects of this paper.

  10. The book that I have is called reckoning With Homelessness by Kim Hopper. it's published by Cornell University Press and is a scholarly text. But I actually will not be using this book in my essay as I have decided to shift my focus.

The piece of literature I will be using will be Ragged Dick, but the focus of my essay will be on the film Gangs of New York slight comparassion between the two. Gangs of New York focuses on poverty and escaping it through violence. This film focus on a lot of the same issue of Ragged Dick but in a much different, and more realistic of the time fashion. Instead of honesty being the best policy , but how dishonesty, and hating the upper classes is a way progress in the world.

  11. I found two books in the libary - Children Living In Temporary Shelters; How Homelessness Effects Their Perception of Home by Alice M Epps and African American Children Who Have Experienced Homelessness by Nancy C. Compton. I feel that both texts are scholarly and should be informative.
Right now, I'm deciding between writing about race and homelessness or writing about homeless children in general. In both cases, I would use Ragged Dick as support for my argument, but I am also considering using the movie Pursuit of Happyness as well.

  12. Here is Briana's comment:

I have a passion for music, I believe that it is important to write about what one feels strongly. I have chosen to write about the film August Rush, and how it depicts the homeless characters in the film. One of my main sources will be Melissa Jonson-Reid and Richard Barth’s "From Placement to Prison: The Path to Adolescent Incarceration from Child Welfare Supervised Foster or Group Care". In my paper, i will at point specifically be looking the correlation between homelessness and gang participation in young homeless adolescents.

  13. My text is Kidwatching in Josie’s World by Neva Medcalf and it is published by the University Press. I believe this is a scholarly source because the research is well supported with critical observations and an extensive bibliography. My main source is Alger. I hope to use both texts to capitalize on Henry as the main source for Dick’s ability to rise from “rags to riches” and not the many “respectable gentlemen” that give Dick handouts. I hope to use Henry’s knowledge and his tutoring Dick to showcase the value of education within homeless youth as the only way to rise above and out of poverty.
